Digital switchover to be monitored by Halton Borough Council’s Environmental Health team   - Thursday, October 8, 2009

THE digital switchover took place across the North West of England on Wednesday, November 4.

It was expected that there would be a significant increase in the number of tv aerials and satellite dishes installed in the lead-up to this event.

Much of the work was carried out by specialist installers but Halton Borough Council expected a small number of firms to carry out the work with little consideration for the safety of themselves or other people who may be affected by their work.

The North West recently saw two fatalities and one major accident involving aerial installers falling from height.

To minimise the risk to residents and businesses, the council's environmental health team took part in a joint project with Merseyside and Cheshire authorities and the Health and Safety Executive.

The project concentrated on the safe installation of tv aerials and satellite dishes during the digital switchover and assessed whether installers were competent and trained and whether they carried out their work safely.

Anyone with concerns over the way in which an aerial or satellite dish installation is carried out, is encouraged to contact a member of the Halton Borough Council’s Environmental Health team on 0151 471 7520.
