The analogue connection was originally included to ensure the receiver was compatible with older HD ready TVs which did not feature HDMI inputs. However, without the copy protection possible via HDMI, this leaves HD programming open to piracy.
A Sky spokesman said the new boxes are 'being introduced as part of our phased removal of boxes with HD component connections. This is in line with Sky’s obligations to some content owners which mean that Sky is phasing out the manufacture of any new HD boxes with HD analogue component outs.'
According to Sky, 'it is estimated that around 1% of the UK’s HD capable televisions could potentially have an HD analogue component connection only'. However the broadcaster says it will not be neglecting those with older, incompatible TV sets saying it will 'work with customers who are unable to connect through HDMI or DVI to ensure they have the appropriate box'.
Models starting with the number 4E300E onwards are affected.
