There has been a lot of rooftop movement in tourist hotspot Blackpool recently after hoteliers switched aerials in time for the digital revolution.
In response to a report claiming most have yet to enter the digital age, many of the hotels and B&Bs in this busy resort now offer satellite TV as hundreds of others scramble to make the move before next year.
A DigitalUK survey found more than half of accommodation providers in the resort have not prepared for the switchover in October 2009 when the analogue signal will be switched off and those without the new equipment will see their screens go dark.
Jo Waters, North West Regional Manager for Digital UK, said: Our research shows that, with switchover happening next year, the tourism sector must do more to avoid guests coming downstairs to complain there really is nothing on TV."
But the St Chad’s Hotel Cluster Group insists many are taking action and is urging other hoteliers to follow suit.
Steve Fazakerley, of the Arthington Hotel, said: “We will be able to offer Freeview in every room, along with sports and movies in the lounge. It’s all about investing in the hotels and the facilities we offer.”
Melanie Dobson, of the Beverley Hotel, added: “We got in early because so many people will leave it till the last minute and may have to wait.
“The switchover has helped us prepare for next year and we hope it will give our customers more.”
Lisa Daniels, from the Strathdon Hotel, said: “When you have a 10-room hotel it works out quite cheap. It’s surprising how many people want to watch TV when they come to stay.”
Jacqui Morris, secretary of StayBlackpool, said: “We have found customers are requesting digital TV and WI FI when booking.
“The switchover in central Blackpool is not scheduled to happen until October 2009. It is important to prioritise investment and get the basics in place and then build up the facilities from there.”
