DAB Digital radio is a new transmission system that brings all the benefits of digital broadcasting to the world of radio.
Digital Audio Broadcasting gives you far greater station choice, better reception & clarity of sound with no re-tuning. Useful text information is also received
More Choice
Digital radio is a far more efficient radio transmission system. This means that many more stations can be broadcast within the same comparable amount of radio spectrum. This means that on DAB you can hear all your favourite analogue stations plus many additional 'digital only' services.
Some of the most recent DAB products combine FM & DAB, giving the widest of listening options. As well as improved clarity of sound and more stations, DAB digital radios also offer a text screen which allows you to receive information about the programmes on air. This might include the name of a show, phone numbers & email addresses. Some BBC Music networks also carry "now playing" track listings, news headlines, sports results and weather.
Great Reception
DAB digital radio doesn't suffer from the annoying effects of interference caused by adverse atmospheric conditions or electrical interference, which can spoil analogue broadcasts. With DAB digital radio you get a more robust reception and pure, clear sound all the time, as long as you are within the coverage area.
No re-tuning
The BBC's digital radio stations are broadcast on the same single frequency wherever you are in the country. This means that if you are listening to one of the BBC's national networks you don't need to re-tune an in-car DAB digital radio when you're on the move. However local BBC stations and many commercial stations availability varies in different locations around the country and may require an 'autotune' to make some accessible via your DAB radio in any one specific location.
Free
Digital radio is free- there are no subscriptions to pay.
Extra Information
Have you ever heard a song on the radio and wanted to know who it is by or what it's called? Or tuned into speech radio and wanted to know what the programme is about? DAB digital radio sets come equipped with a small screen which carries information about the programme you're listening to. This may be a plot summary to a play, the name of the track currently being played, email addresses, the latest headlines, sports results or competition details.
